A.B. in Italian with an emphasis on Italian Studies and B.S. in Mathematics, '14, studied abroad in Sienna, Italy, Ph.D. in Mathematics at Emory University, currently an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Texas at Tyler.

I graduated from UGA in 2014 with bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Italian (with an emphasis on Italian Studies). I studied abroad in Siena, Italy in the summer of 2012 in a full-immersion program with Siena Italian Studies.  I earned my Ph.D. in Mathematics at Emory University in 2019, and I am currently an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Tyler.  In addition to teaching and doing research in number theory, I also referee for peer-reviewed academic journals, write reviews for high quality publications for the American Mathematical Society, organize special sessions at mathematics conferences, and mentor undergraduate research at UT Tyler.

A memorable international experience I had at the University of Georgia was spending time with Prof. Bianchelli during my study abroad in Siena, Italy.  I had taken (and thoroughly enjoyed) some Classics courses from Prof. Bianchelli, and I learned that she was from Tuscany.  I met up with her during my time in Italy, and we went for a walk and had some drinks and delicious snacks at a cafe.  It was so neat to get to know her in the place where she grew up and to learn firsthand and in an informal setting about Italian culture.

Studying language, literature, and culture at Georgia prepared me to travel around the world for mathematics conferences with the highest level of appreciation and respect for the people and cultures of the host countries. I encourage students at Georgia today to learn about a culture different from their own. It’s so enlightening to see and understand others’ values and traditions.
