Students Share their Experience

Portuguese Table 3

"The Portuguese Table is not only a place to go to improve your Portuguese, but it is also a place to make friends and learn about the many activities organized by Brazilian students on campus. Conversation is casual, but we also have games and activities to prompt conversation. The Portuguese table is also a nice place to get tips about places in Georgia where you can experience a little bit of Brazilian culture and food. We are always around and willing to meet new people." - Daniel

"Are you a Portuguese learner of any level? Then join us at the Main Library in the fall for some games, talks, and language practice! UGA Portuguese instructors bring new activities every Monday afternoon so you can develop your language skills outside of class and meet up the other Portuguese speakers on campus!" - Lais

Table 2"Now that I’m finishing my last year as a graduate student, I realize how many positive experiences grew out of attending and leading the Portuguese Table.  At first, I attended the group as a student, then later I volunteered as a TA. Even though I will not be teaching Portuguese this semester, I will try to be involved as much as possible. Let me begin by saying this event is somewhat required in that students receive points toward their participation, but when most students realize it can actually be entertaining to practice the language outside the classroom, they usually enjoy the activities we have planned for them.  Our Monday evening plans consist of oral questions and answers, verb conjugation games, speed dating “ice breaker” games using Portuguese expressions, and just talking as much as possible in Portuguese. Since we meet in the coffee shop at the library, there is the opportunity for drinks and snacks, but many times we bring homemade brigadeiros, beijinhos, or cookies as a special treat. Most of all, we get to know the students outside of the classroom, and on a different level. Perhaps getting to know their TA encourages them and puts them more at ease to come and get help during office hours, too." - Vera

"Mesa Portuguesa aims to be a stress-free experience. Yes, for most people this experience will lie outside their comfort zone. This is part of the process. However, it is important to participate. First, you may just observe and listen; this is perfectly acceptable. It is up to you to steep yourself in Mesa Portugues and take advantage of this learning opportunity. Thus, steadfast participation will procure the best results." - Manuel
