Why Major in a Language?

Studying a language gives you the power to fully participate in a distinctive cultural world. Our programs in French, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish are designed to build your understanding of the structures of language itself while you draw connections among societies across the globe. Gaining oral and written fluency deepens your mental flexibility and builds social skills in transformative ways as well. That is why language study prepares you for a life in professions that require awareness of multiple perspectives and an excellent ability to communicate with people.

As a major or minor you will gain skills in interpretation and analysis, emotional and artistic sensitivity, primary source research, and become familiar with a rich range of human creativity. Graduate students are mentored in the advanced study of linguistics, literature and culture while they benefit from rigorous training in foreign language pedagogy in an active and supportive scholarly community.
