SPRING 2024. Richard Neupert (FILM) teaches the class Mondays and Fridays, along with Carine Sigaud (FRENCH). There is a required Film Screening each Monday as well. Wednesdays will have a separate French discussion led by Carine Sigaud. 

We cover the Lumières and the earliest films through the 1920s avant-garde, classic 1930-1950s movies, & the nouvelle vague up to today. Students learn film vocabulary and engage with creative work by major figures like Jean Renoir, Jean-Luc Godard, & Agnès Varda right up to Claire Denis and Céline Sciamma. Most written work, a portion of the readings, and student presentations will be in French.

Topics in French and Francophone studies; themes, movements, problems, artistic and cultural manifestations, and their relationship to literary and intellectual developments. Topics can cover individual periods or several centuries. Given in English. Students do appropriate assignments in French.

Not open to students with credit in FREN 4180

This course will be taught in an integrated format. Assignments, discussions, and student oral and written work following guidelines proposed in the proposal for Integrating Languages Across the Curriculum: 1. A significant portion (more than 25%) of the total course readings is in the target language; 2. A significant portion (more than 25%) of the term papers, reports, and other written work is in the target language; 3. Opportunities to give oral presentations in the target language; 4. Some time is spent in discussion in the target language, either during class or in break-out sessions.
